Mtirala National Park

Just 20km drive from Batumi, Mtirala National Park is an extremely humid area with a wide range of flora and fauna, including: deer, wild boar, booted eagle, owl, golden oriole, salamander, Caucasian toad, rhododendron, cherry laurel, colchic box and a variety of lianas. Here you can hike, bike, zip line and camp, surrounded by lush green deep forest and some of the best trails near the Black Sea coast.

Size

The nature reserve’s area is 15,698 hectares (or 30,000 football stadiums).

From 250m to 1,250m altitude, famous for relict forests, diversity of wetland ecosystems and biodiversity.

History

The Mtirala National Park was founded in 2014, part of UNESCO World Heritage List since 2021.

Good to Know

“Mtirala” in Georgian means “to cry” and it has the highest rainfall in the country.

How to Get

Public Transport

Take a bus from the old Batumi bus station to Chakvistavi village. Buses run twice a day, morning and afternoon.

Private 4wd vehicle

Driving from Batumi to Mtirala National Park is easy, no need for 4×4 vehicles.

Eat and Sleep

There are several cafes and guesthouses in Chakvistavi village that offer delicious meals. Be sure to try the local cuisine, which is based mainly on fish, honey and walnuts.

Water is drinkable from the springs and tap water in Chakvistavi village is also drinkable, bring your water bottle from the Tsivtskaro trek.

There are several guesthouses and budget hotels in Chakvistavi village, but booking in advance is recommended during the high season.
There is also a camping site in the park.

What to Do

Hiking

Two main routes are your best hiking options in Mtirala National Park:

  • The Tsablnari route is a relatively easy hike that includes a waterfall, a lake and a zip line. This can be done in 2-3 hours at a relaxed pace.
  • Tsivtskaro route is longer and more challenging and can be done in 1 or 2 days depending on your pace and fitness level.
